But What Is EMDR, Really?
I know there are a lot of misconceptions, confusion, and even some fears about EMDR. Maybe you’ve heard it’s “just moving your eyes back and forth” or that it’s only for PTSD. Maybe you’re wondering if it’s some kind of hypnosis or whether you’ll have to relive painful memories in order to heal.
So let’s clear things up.
EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help your brain reprocess distressing experiences so that they no longer hold the same emotional charge. It’s not about erasing memories—it’s about shifting how they live in your nervous system. Instead of feeling stuck in the past, your brain gets to integrate the experience in a way that allows you to move forward.
Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound), EMDR activates your brain’s natural ability to heal. This process helps reduce emotional distress, challenge negative beliefs, and free you from the subconscious loops that keep you feeling stuck.
How I Show Up Differently in EMDR Sessions
EMDR sessions feel a little different from traditional talk therapy. In standard sessions, we might spend more time exploring emotions, processing events verbally, and engaging in insight-driven discussions. But in EMDR, my role shifts in a few key ways:
✨ Less talking, more processing – EMDR isn’t about analyzing experiences in the same way we do in talk therapy. Once we begin reprocessing, I’ll guide you through the process but won’t interrupt unless needed. This is because EMDR allows your brain to do the work without over-explaining or intellectualizing it.
✨ You lead the process, and I help you stay grounded – Your brain will bring up what it’s ready to work through. I’ll be there to help you stay present, regulate your nervous system, and provide support if things feel intense.
✨ A structured approach with a clear framework – EMDR follows an 8-phase process, meaning you’ll always know where we are in the journey. Some sessions may focus more on preparation and grounding, while others will involve deep reprocessing. For newer clients, we may take 1-3 months of safety building and resourcing (Phases 1-2) before diving into further, deeper Phases. It truly depends on the individual, and I will tailor sessions based on your needs, wants, level of resourcing, safety etc and my professional judgement as well.
✨ Emphasis on body awareness – Because trauma is stored in the nervous system, I’ll guide you in noticing body sensations and shifts, helping you track changes that signal healing. This is a truly mind-body therapy, and it is awesome to witness the integration occur.
✨ We work at your pace – EMDR is powerful, but it’s not about rushing. We’ll ensure you feel safe and resourced before diving into deeper processing. Every brain is different, however my trainers said “They’ve never met a brain that couldn’t do EMDR,” some may just take longer or shorter to get there.
Who Is EMDR For?
While EMDR is widely known for treating PTSD, it’s also incredibly effective for:
✅ Childhood wounds & attachment trauma
✅ Anxiety & overthinking loops
✅ Addiction, substance use, etc
✅ Chronic self-doubt & limiting beliefs
✅ People-pleasing & boundary struggles
✅ Phobias, panic, and intense fears
✅ Grief & loss
If you’ve ever felt like you know better but your body and emotions won’t let you do better—EMDR might be the missing piece.
How EMDR Sessions Are Structured
I offer 50 min EMDR sessions at the same rate as my regular therapy sessions, so there’s no extra charge for this modality—it’s simply another tool in my toolbox available to support your healing.
Most clients start with 50-minute weekly sessions, but EMDR can sometimes benefit from longer sessions, especially when we’re deep in the processing phase. Because of this, I’m also happy to announce I will offer 2-hour EMDR Intensives when needed (must be a client and already have had at least 5 standard sessions with me) and when my availability allows:
First-time 2-hour EMDR intensive: $425
Regular 2-hour EMDR intensive: $450
These are priced to reflect depth of processing, the structured nature of the session, and the level of energy and expertise required to guide clients through extended reprocessing.
These longer sessions can be helpful for:
✔️ Clients who want to go deeper without feeling rushed
✔️ Those working through more complex or long-standing trauma
✔️ People who prefer fewer sessions but more extended time to process
If you’re unsure which option is best for you, we can discuss it together and find what feels most supportive for your needs. Please inquire if interested!
Does EMDR Work Virtually?
Yes! Virtual EMDR is just as effective as in-person sessions. In fact, many people find it even more comfortable because they’re in their own space, which can make processing feel safer and more natural. This is best done with a laptop or computer that is at least 12 inches in length across the screen and 12-14inches away from your face. Phone screens will not work for this modality.
With virtual EMDR, we use specialized tools to guide bilateral stimulation—this can be done through eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues based on each client. Typically, we will aim to use eye movements first. I provide clear instructions and adjust the process to fit your needs, so you can experience the full benefits of EMDR from the comfort of your home.
